Abstract

Concept maps (CMs) are diagrams of meaning that enable the organization and knowledge representation in different ways. The CMs have been developed to support the meaningful learning theory of David Ausubel it considers that significant learning happens when new information is anchored in knowledge that the individual already owns. The interaction between the previous and new knowledge can be represented by CMs. This research was conducted in order to verify the effectiveness of different methodology with CMs for the construction of knowledge by students on the Nervous System (NS) content often considered complex and difficult to understand. In this sense was proposed and evaluated a teaching sequence for construction of CMs and investigated the effectiveness of CM as an evaluation tool. The target audience of the research were 30 students in 8th grade of elementary school a public school in Goiânia. The analysis of CMs created by students showed that them built knowledge during the pedagogical on the development of CMs and about the contents of NS, since during the methodology were developed more CMs complex. At the end of the proposal the CMs were used as an evaluation tool and this activity 74% of students produced excellent CMs as to the number of concepts, organization and creativity. These results indicate that CMs promote the construction of knowledge and assist in meaningful learning. Thus, this pedagogical proposal can be developed in the classroom to facilitate the teaching-learning process of many of the school curriculum content.
