Calibration of a micrometer: an experiment in teaching through mathematical modeling

No presente artigo analisou-se a Modelagem Matemática como estratégia de ensino e aprendizagem de acordo com as tendências propostas pela Educação Matemática, no conteúdo de ajuste de curvas, na disciplina de Introdução à Modelagem Matemática, com alunos formandos do Curso de Licenciatura em Matemática. A atividade realizada envolveu análise de uma situação-problema real, o trabalho em grupo e a troca de informações entre alunos e professor na busca da solução destes problemas, utilizando-se de conceitos matemáticos por meio da Modelagem Matemática. No final das atividades percebeu-se que os conteúdos matemáticos foram contextualizados em situações cotidianas reais, o diálogo discente/discente e docente/discente colaborou na interpretação e entendimento de determinados conceitos e na determinação do modelo de calibração do equipamento o que os permite aprender Matemática de forma prática e prazerosa, o que demonstra que a Modelagem Matemática é uma estratégia de ensino e aprendizagem que pode contribuir para o aprendizado de Matemática.
In this paper we analyzed the mathematical modeling as a strategy for teaching and learning in line with the trends proposed by the Mathematics Education in the content of curve fitting, in the subject Introduction to Mathematical Modeling, with graduating students of the Mathematics B.Sc. couse. The activity was carried out involving the analysis of a real problem situation, group work and exchange of information between students and teacher in search of solution of these problems, using mathematical concepts through mathematical modeling. At the end of the activities it was realized that the mathematical contents were contextualized in real everyday situations, and the dialogue student / student and student / teacher collaborated in the interpretation and understanding of certain concepts in determining the model for calibration of equipment which allows them to learn mathematics in a practical and enjoyable way, which shows that mathematical modeling is a strategy for teaching and learning that can contribute to the learning of mathematics.
