Abstract

Undergraduate students in their first year in the Chemistry College at the Federal University of Acre often present learning difficulties. This paper reports an experiential learning framework applied to a group studying General Chemistry in which playful activities created a ludic atmosphere conclusive to deep learning and interaction. In the class there was a totally blind female student that was excluded by her peers and, like them, had problems to learn the approach to the Theory of Valence Shell Electrons Pair Repulsion (VSEPR). For this, the professor developed a project in which the playful creativity and integration of students were critical. The students produced 30 structural models for various chemicals, as well as created badges and ornaments worn with their clothing containing chemical structures. The framework generated good results. A real improvement in student learning was achieved and the blind student surprised everyone by replying all the inquiries that have been made and was in fact included in the group. The project allows us to conclude that a playful approach to education can greatly contribute to student learning, and therefore could be used at the University.
