The “nail polish and styrofoam” case: contributions to investigative activities in chemistry teaching

Este artigo apresenta a aplicação de uma atividade experimental de caráter investigativo em uma turma de 2º ano do Ensino Médio. Na atividade os alunos foram desafiados a resolver um caso envolvendo um interessante fenômeno resultante da interação entre esmalte de unha e isopor. Para resolução, os grupos de alunos elaboraram hipóteses e submeteram-nas a testes experimentais, utilizando materiais de seus cotidianos. Constatou-se que o experimento proposto despertou a curiosidade dos estudantes, estimula-os a participar ativamente da aula, além de ter permitido identificar e corrigir erros conceituais. Ainda, apresentam-se sugestões, aos docentes, para elaboração e aplicação de atividades investigativas.
This article presents the application of an investigative experiment in a group of 2nd year of high school. In the activity the students were challenged to solve a case involving the interesting phenomenon resultant from the interaction between nail polish and Styrofoam . To resolve the case, students groups have developed hypotheses and submitted them to experimental tests , using everyday materials. It was found that the proposed experiment aroused students curiosity, stimulated them to an active participation, and allowed identify and fix conceptual errors. Furthermore there are some suggestions, for teacher, about preparation and applications of investigative activities.
