Friends of the Jaguar: Using the Jaguar Figure to Discuss Animal Rights and Environmental Preservation in Early Childhood Education

Fruto de ações desenvolvidas pela linha de pesquisa D.I.A.N. – Debates e Investigações sobre Animais e Natureza –, o presente artigo ambiciona apresentar e discutir a metodologia e os resultados obtidos ao longo de intervenção lúdico-reflexiva elaborada a partir da figura da espécie Panthera onca. O grupo D.I.A.N. destina-se a abordar, com distintas faixas-etárias, direitos animais e sustentabilidade, confeccionando e aplicando atividades que visem o fomento do pensamento crítico, o ativismo sociocientífico (REIS, 2013) e o combate ao especismo. Um de nossos públicos são crianças de 4 a 6 anos matriculadas EMEI localizada na Zona Leste paulistana, e, com essas, realizamos atividade na qual a figura da onça-pintada foi utilizada para discutir o zoológico, o desmatamento (associado à pecuária) e os biomas nacionais, abordando preservação e direitos animais. A atividade foi aplicada em duas turmas de aproximadamente 30 crianças cada e os resultados nos demonstram que essa auxiliou na compreensão, por parte das crianças, dos problemas éticos referentes ao encarceramento de animais e das complicações ambientais acarretadas pelo desmatamento. Majoritariamente, as crianças se posicionaram favoráveis à liberdade das onças e contrárias à caça e destruição das matas, sendo capazes de argumentar sobre seus pontos de vistas.
Result of actions developed by the research-extension group called D.I.A.N. - Debates and Investigations about Animals and Nature -, this article aims to present and discuss the methods and the results obtained through the application of an intervention elaborated from the figure of the species Panthera onca. The D.I.A.N. aims to debate animal rights and sustainability with different audiences through the preparation and application of activities that promotes critical thinking, socio-scientific activism (REIS, 2013) and tries to fight speciesism. One of our audiences are children from 4 to 6 years old who attend an early childhood school located in São Paulo. With those kids, we performed an activity in which the jaguar figure was used to discuss the zoo, deforestation (associated with livestock) and the national biomes, associated with preservation and animal rights. The activity was applied in two different classes of approximately 30 children each and the results showed that kids were able to understand the ethical problems related to the incarceration of animals and the environmental complications caused by deforestation. After the intervention, most of the children declared themselves in favor of the jaguar freedom and against hunting and deforestation, being able defend their points of view.
